Cumbia is a music form originated in the Caribbean coasts of Colombia during the 17th and 18th century, when african and indigenous populations were enslaved and exploited by spanish colonies.

It emerged as a courtship ritual dance and takes its name from the african cumbéwhich means dance or festivity. Cumbia represents the melodic union of three different cultures with the fusion of african drums, indigenous flutes or gaitas, and the spanish maracas.

The gowns, as well as the musical instruments, have been permeated over time with additional cultural elements, colors and layers and it’s rhythm has spread all over Latin America.

Cumbia represents the roots of our people and showcases our rich cultural background. It symbolizes the struggle of a nation, authenticity, respect, celebration of life and ultimately freedom.
